WHEN A NEW MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE took over in 1976, they decided to create a new exhibition. This was fficially opened in 1982 by Lord Davies of Llandinam..

The panels depicted life in late, medieval Wales and the background to the Owain Glyn Dŵr uprising. They showed Owain's links to previous Princes of Wales and his battles after 1400. The links with Scotland and France were clearly displayed and naturally the famous Parliament of 1404 in Machynlleth. Here, representatives from many parts of Wales as well as dignitaries from Scotland, France and Castile came to see Owain Glyn Dŵr crowned as Prince of Wales. Other panels described the Pennal (5 miles from Machynlleth) Letter to the King of France in 1406. This letter outlined Glyn Dŵr and his Ministers' vision for Wales and specifically the creation of an independent Church and the establishment of two universities [for master copy see 2009 developments].

At present, the exhibition also has pictures by MarK Hodge, a local artist, and contributions by the Countryside Commission for Wales and the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales. Murray Urquhart's famous mural depicting Glyn Dŵr's victory at the Battle of Hyddgen in 1402 can also be seen in Parliament House. This is the only large scale mural of its type created in Wales pre 1914. All this for only £1.50 for adults and £20 for groups of school children, college students and coach parties.

The development proposals were presented to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the current estimate of the cost is £3.8 million. The H.L.F will not provide the whole amount even if they approve the project. Therefore, an appeal will be needed to raise some hundreds of thousands of pounds. If the bid is successful the intention is to create a modern exhibition using the latest communication techniques in order to:

Ÿ
describe the life and significance of Owain Glyn Dŵr. This will be the main exhibition about Glyn Dŵr.
Ÿ
an outline of the building's history
Ÿ
input from CCW and RCaHMW
Ÿ
provide opportunities for use by local societies.

It is intended to create an audio visual room and education rooms. There will also be a cafe and a shop. A major challenge is to install a lift in such a historical building. Our aim is to see these plans realised over the next, few years.
